The Impact of ADL Disability through Social Networks on Depression in Old Age

Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the impact of ADL disability on depression in old age and to test the relationship that social networks are a significant mediator of the ADL disability-depression association. As a result of literature review, a proposed structural equation model concerning the aforementioned variables has been identified. The present study analyzed the 5th wave data from Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS), employing the SEM procedure etc. The major results of the study are as follows. First, both BADL disability and IADL disability could have a negative effect on social networks respectively. Second, both BADL disability and IADL disability could have a positive effect on depression respectively. Third, social networks could have a negative effect on depression. Fourth, social networks could be a significant mediator between BADL and depression, and between IADL and depression respectively. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are presented that it is critical to develop various intervention strategies for enhancing ability to perform ADLs and social networks.
